What Is a Certified Recovery Specialist

More Than Support – Someone Who Gets It

A Certified Recovery Specialist is a person in recovery who has completed formal training and certification to provide peer support to others. They’re not a therapist or a case manager. They’re someone who has lived what you’re living — and chose to come back and help others find their way through it.

That shared experience is the point. It’s what makes a CRS different from anyone else on your care team, and why so many people find it easier to take that first step with a peer than with a professional.

“It is easier to take the first step with a peer.”

We Walk With You, Not Ahead of You

Your CRS isn’t there to hand you a list and send you on your way. They’re a consistent presence — someone who shows up with you, helps you make sense of the options, and stays in your corner through the hard parts.

Some of what a CRS can help with:
  • Navigating resources and services — knowing what’s out there and how to access it
  • Staying connected during the difficult stretches of treatment
  • Setting goals and working through them at your pace
  • Building a broader support network so you’re not leaning on one person alone
  • Finding your footing with employment, housing, and everyday life

You Don’t Have to Have It Figured Out

You don’t need a plan before you walk in. You don’t need to know what you need. A conversation with a CRS is the right first step — and that’s all it has to be.
